In the United States there are over 160 million men and women who are either overweight or obese.

This leads to tons of health problems, both mentally and physically. Some people are overweight due to health problems (such as thyroid issues or things like PCOS) and others have found themselves with extra weight due to poor eating and exercise habits. Regardless of the reason, people are always trying to lose weight.

Unfortunately, there are a few mistakes that people who are trying to eat healthy tend to make. Those mistakes can be detrimental to our health and discouraged from continuing to try to make healthy choices. Here are a few things to watch out for.

Low-Fat Foods

Many foods marked as low-fat or fat-free can still be high in calories and carbohydrates. Weight-loss smoothies are a perfect example. Although they might not have any harmful fats they can be loaded with bad carbohydrates. These bad carbohydrates cause a sugar rush which causes you to feel lethargic and be hungry soon after drinking them.

Soda

A diet soda must be okay for you to have if you are on a diet, right? Wrong. The artificial sweeteners most commonly used in diet sodas trigger appetite cues to be sent to your brain. If you are drinking a diet soda with a meal this will cause you to feel hungrier and eat more than you would if you had a glass of water with your meal instead.

Skipping Meals

Skipping meals is one of the worst things you can do if you are trying to lose weight, especially if that meal is breakfast. The American Journal of Epidemiology released a study showing that people who skipped breakfast are almost 5 times more likely to be overweight. This is because skipping a meal increases your hunger and slows your metabolism. When your metabolism is slowed down your body goes into fat storage mode.
